UGHS Students Shine at UW-Parkside Geography Bowl
Freshman Team Wins First Place in Freshman-Sophomore Division
On Thursday, May 22, seventeen Union Grove High School students showcased their geographic knowledge and quick thinking at the annual Geography Bowl competition hosted by UW-Parkside. Representing all four grade levels, UGHS entered one team per grade in the fast-paced event, which challenges students in a round-robin, "Jeopardy-style" format.
The standout performance of the day came from our freshman team, which earned first place in the Freshman-Sophomore division with an impressive 13-1 record. Congratulations to team members Andrew Grimes, Lilly Moore, Lucy Sheahan, and Calvin Keating for their exceptional showing!
The Geography Bowl consists of a series of 7-minute rounds where teams rotate rooms to compete against every other group. Questions cover a wide range of topics including capitals, rivers, latitude and longitude, and population. After the preliminary rounds, the teams with the top records face off in a final round held in front of the entire group.
UGHS’s participation is led by Ms. Amy Buchanan, who has been coaching students at the Bowl since 2012. Students are invited to join the team based on their academic performance in AP Human Geography or by expressing interest through word of mouth. Many students who join as freshmen continue to participate all four years.
“The success of our freshman team this year is exciting,” said Ms. Buchanan. “It shows the strength of our program and hints at more big wins in the future.”
Congratulations to all our competitors for representing Union Grove with pride and excellence!
